Luckily I'm not jet lagged, probably because I had a 2 hour kip before dinner last night.

The holiday was great and I've enjoyed it very much. Gill & Barry's wedding in Sabah was lovely and the weather was so good on the day that we all got sun burned. The Japan trip was also very good and I got the chance to jump into the hot springs naked! Too bad that I didn't have enough time in Hong Kong to organise a gathering with my primary classmates. I guess I'll have to arrange one when I next visit Hong Kong which will be in November when I go to attend Judy & Mikey's wedding.

I took a fair amount of photos during the holiday and it will take me some time to sort them out before I can post them online.

Last Saturday we went to the new Wembley Stadium to watch the first competitive football match. It was a friendly between the under 21 teams of England and Italy. This was the first time I went to a football match and I didn't know what to expect from it. We got there fairly early in the morning and I'm glad we took the bus. It took just over an hour to get there. We thought we were early but there were already lots of people arriving at the same time. The gates didn't open until 10.30am (2 hrs before kick off), so I took a few photos of the structure. Unfortunately the weather wasn't great, so the photos didn't come out very nice.

Click here for the photos taken at Wembley Stadium. I just hope that I will have a happy and enjoyable 2006.

I'm supposed to be going out this weekend, but after what happened on Thursday, I've decided to stay home just to calm my Mum a bit. The atrocities have affected all of us in some ways, even though most of us were not directly involved. All the explosions happened in familiar places of London, in particular the Piccadilly line because I do travel on that part of the line on my way to work. Most of us have expected something like this to occur sooner or later, but that doesn't mean we were prepared to absorb the initial shock followed by frantically finding out if our friends and families were okay.

London went back to normality today. Apart from a few stations remaining closed and a reduced service on some underground lines, everything appeared to be back to normal. I couldn't get home last night so I stayed at Sarah's (my boss) place. I took the bus home this morning. On my way home, I've noticed the streets were more quiet than the usual buzzing atmosphere. I don't mean less people, there were still lots of people on the streets, but people in general remained more quiet than usual. There was a TV news report this morning on the emptiness of some tube stations, the reporter mentioned that this could be due to people heeded the advice from the metropolitan police to stay home or they were just scared of commuting on the underground. I'm sure it was because most people were following the advice from the police. I'm certain that London will be back to normal next Monday morning when we all return to work. I'm sure after this tragic event, all of us will treasure life more and there is nothing more important than life itself.

I haven't blogged for a wee while, not because I was busy but due to the fact that I'm lazy. I've been going out a lot more since the last time I blogged and it has been great. Although my Mum did moan at me for going out too much. I don't think it was much, I only go out twice a week. Okay, it must be said that in comparison with the past, I do go out a lot more nowadays.

I'm currently into playing golf, I must at some point take some lessons before I learn all the bad habits. I just have to find the time and and find someone to go with me. It is a bit boring to go on your own for lessons. So if any of my friends reading this blog is interested in learning golf, please let me know.

Apart from golf, I went to a Salsa Dance class last Friday with my friend. It was great, much more fun than the few lessons I went to a few years' back. A few of my friends came to support us, that was very nice of them. I wouldn't mind going again to learn a bit more. I must admit I do have a very short attention span, so maybe I will give up after a couple of lessons.

Anyway, I must get back to work now, I'm actually blogging from work.

I made some honey dried pork (蜜汁豬肉乾) today. I do. Six degrees of separation basically means that we are all only 6 persons away from each other. I remember watching a TV programme on the BBC some years ago about a journalist who was trying to find someone through six degrees of separation. If I remember correctly, in the end she succeeded. It's a bit like Friendster, where you can meet friends of a friend up to three degrees.

The reason why I suddenly think about six degrees of separation is because I'll be meeting my primary classmates this Sunday - one who used to be in the same p.m. class as me (I haven't seen her since I left Hong Kong and moved to the UK back in 1987), the other is a friend (from a.m. class) of my p.m. classmates. It's going to be my fourth time meeting primary classmates in London. It kinds of feel weird meeting old classmates in London and not in Hong Kong. I found out today my old classmate attended the same University as me and she knows some of my friends, this lead me to think about six degrees of separation.

The world is very small indeed.

Olympic - London 2012? Once again the tube was delayed today, but the most annoying thing was that they didn't make any announcement for 20 minutes before announcing "the next train will arrive in 4 minutes". The train arrived going to Edgware, not the destination for me, so I went to take the Piccadily Line instead and then caught a bus home. Another tiring day, not due to work or an early session at the gym, but due to the tube delays, again!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://drmelon.blogspot.com/2005/02/olympic-london-2012-no-way.html' title='Olympic - London 2012? I'll be starting with my gym induction on 1st February. I've been going to the college gym on and off last year but I have decided to join a proper gym, coz the college gym is only a temporary one while the college rebuild the sports centre. Luckily, I can get the corporate rate for the membership and it works out not too expensive. Anyway, I guess I must now keep my motivation up to go regularly, in order to get my doses of endorphins. I do feel better after a good workout. Who knows, maybe in 6 months' time, I might be fit enough to start training for a 10k run?!

Stir-Fry Homemade Udon (手打烏冬)

I made Stir-Fry Homemade Udon (手打烏冬) today. The meeting concerns the application for a new grant for our service, and we need to ask fellow academics for their support. I hope it will turn out okay, otherwise I will be out of a job by mid November when the current grant runs out this year. I guess I am not worried about being unemployed, but we do have a good plan for the next grant and I would like to be a part of it as there will be many new stuff to learn and implement.

I have to dress up for tomorrow's meeting. I usually go to work wearing my jeans and tops, but whenever we have a meeting, I tend to dress up a bit. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but this time I have to find a pair of flat sole shoes to wear as my foot still hurts a bit. I managed to dig out a pair of dusty shoes I haven't wore for at least a year. It took me some time to clean it and shoe shine it. I thought my foot was getting better last Friday, but the pain returns yesterday and today. Maybe I went back to my normal walking speed too quickly. I guess I just have to walk slowly again until my foot is fully recovered.

Hurray! Bik & Wing - as they know I'm limping so I can't travel far!) and we went to an Italian restuarant 5 minutes from our house along with my family and my nephew. The food was quite good and they have massive pizzas. For those who chose pizza, none of them could finish eating them. We were lucky to get a table as that place is noramlly fully booked and we didn't make any reservation. My friends ended up having dinner at our place as my Mum was very persuasive! Hehe! ;-p I must apologise to Adrian for keeping Bik so long, and he had to cook his own dinner. They also made 'banana cake' ("heung jiu go" - 香蕉糕). It is so easy to make and they seemed to like it. Let's hope it will get better soon, I hate limping around!

My foot still hurts...

My foot still hurts...

A new year

This time, I didn't wait for the arrival of year 2005. Well, I didn't do what I used to do in previous years. Normally I would just sit by my bedroom window and watch the clock ticking until midnight. I was so tired last night that I only managed to see some fireworks from my bedroom window. I'm sure I fell asleep shortly after midnight.

I have no new year resolution as I don't see any point of it. I don't think I should plan and restrict myself what I should be doing in the new year. Life changes every second...and sometimes out of our control, so it is best to live it without piling extra pressure onto myself.

I'm in pain!

I have no idea what happened to my foot, but since yesterday afternoon it hurts a lot. I don't recall myself injuring my foot at all. It hurts so much that I can feel the pain when I walk or just stand on my foot. My foot isn't swollen or anything, no visible clues to suggest the cause of the pain. The only thing I can do is to hope that it will go away very soon, otherwise I will have to go and see a doctor to search for a cure.

A relaxing lunch

Today I was planning to have lunch with Wing at the "Queen's Head & Artichoke", but when we got there the place was closed for refurbishment. I was a bit annoyed by this as I was looking forward to taste the "tapas" there. Oh well, we had to find another place, so we ended up in another restaurant called "Eat & Two Veg". Yep, you've guessed it, it's a vegetarian restaurant. At first we thought it is a gastro pub, but it is more like a restaurant than a pub, but you could still just go there for a drink. The food was'nt bad, quite a large portion. The atmosphere wasn't bad beither ut the noise of the fruits juicer was unbearable. It sounded like a place taking off. The take-off times vary depending on how many customers ordered freshly squeezed juices. We didn't have the juices but went for the smoothies instead. I think we made the wrong choice as the smoothies were not freshly prepared, they were just "innocent" smoothies. I could have bought that from "Waitrose" whenever I want. I guess I wouldn't mind going to this place again, but I know what I won't be ordering next time.

Visited countries

I came across this web site World66, which allows you to generate a map of the countries you have visited. There are constant updates on the number of casualties on each news report. I guess most people are like me, not realising the extent of the disaster until the new figures of death are announced. The only thing we can do now is to make donations to charities to help the massive aid effort. If you wish to give donations, you could donate to charities such as Red Cross or Oxfam. We went to Selfridges and I bought a pillow which was on sale. It's not just any kind of pillow. It is a very expensive TEMPUR pillow. It was on sale and even with the 20% discount, it cost 63 GBP! I hope it is worth it as I have been having neck pains from sleep, possibly due to the pillow I use. Let's hope it will be comfy and alleviate my neck pains.

Apart from the sales, I've been mainly staying at home cooking and baking. It took a long time to prepare the Christmas dinner, and it didn't turn out very well. Starter was too salty because of the parmesan cheese. Main course was too dry because of the over-cooked beef fillet. The only thing that turned out very nice was the dessert - coconut pannacotta with roasted pineapples. I also made fruits tarts, cheesecakes, swiss rolls & jellies.

I have to find things to do for the next few days, coz I won't be back at work until 4th January.

Time flies...
It wasn't that long ago since I got back from my holiday in Hong Kong (HK) & China, and now Christmas is coming next week! Time goes really quickly this year. As I get older, time seems to go quicker every year.

Anyway, I had a great time during my holiday and if some of you have checked out my new online photo albums, you would have noticed that I took a huge amount of photos that you'll probably fall asleep after checking out the first few days. The reason I took so many photos was to record what I've been doing during the holiday. I think this visit to HK was much more relaxing for me. I dunno, but somehow I am now a more relaxed person than 3 years ago.

The highlight of my holiday has to be the SMCS1982 gathering with my primary classmates. I don't know how the others felt about the gathering, I was really happy to see the people I knew many years ago, and some I haven't seen for over 17 years. It is of course impossible to remember everyone's faces and names, but still, it was a good opportunity for each of us to get acquainted with each other. I'm certain that I would love to organise another gathering during my next visit to HK.

The other highlight of my holiday was when I went hiking with my primary classmate Louisa. It was a lastminute thing and for those of you who knows me well, I'm not someone who does thing lastminute. I only met up with Louisa for lunch the day before the hike when she asked if I would like to go hiking with her and her friends. Normally, I would have said no as I never planned things so late. I don't know what happened to me, but I was really keen on this idea and gave Louisa a call that evening to confirm that I will go. I'm really glad that I went. I had a wonderful time seeing the countryside - a rarity in HK. The weather was great and the people were very nice and helpful. Although I had many scratches and knee pains from the hike, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I'm sure I would love to go hiking in HK again if I'm given the opportunity.

There were many other highlights from my holiday, if you want to know what I was up to, you just have to check out my many photos and read the infrequent captions I added to some of the photos.

Now I have to plan what to cook on Christmas Day. It has become a tradition in recent years that my Mum has Christmas Day off, so she doesn't need to carry out any cooking duties. So I'll be in charge cooking dinner on Christmas Day. This year would be differnt from previous years, as Connie and her family won't be coming over. So I should have more time to prepare and cook something different. We normally have roast beef, but I want to cook something different and possibly a three-course meal. I need to rummage through my cook books to find something that's not going to be too challenging. I don't want to ruin the ingredients and end up with nothing to eat as all the shops and restaurants will be closed that day. I don't want to end up eating canned chopped ham and baked beans!

Gatherings

Next month is going to be very special for me, as I will be going to Hong Kong (HK) with my parents for a holiday. I haven't been back for 3 years and it would be nice to meet friends and families. Another reason why it will be special is that I will be having a gathering with my old primary clasmates in HK. Some of them I haven't seen for over 17 years! Wow! A very long time indeed! To be honest, I can't remember some of their faces. Anyway, it would be a good opportunity to get acquainted with each other. Apart from this gathering, there will also be a gathering with old university friends. It has been over 10 years since we first started our first year at university. Wow! A very long time ago as well! I now feel very old...but despite feeling old, I am very much looking forward to these gatherings!

: )

Back from Germany

I'm now back from Germany. It was a tiring trip. I guess short trips are normally more tiring coz you have less time to recover from the travelling, especially from the flights.

The wedding of my friend (Theresa) was great. I really do need to thank her parents for their hospitality for the first 2 nights where I stayed at their house. Of course I need to thank my friend and her husband (Michael) as well. I must take them out for dinner next time when they are visiting London. :-)

So what exactly happened at the wedding? Well, in the morning I went along with my friend to the hair salon for styling her hair and to apply make-up. I also went along and had my hair and make-up done there. For some reasons, I tend to get a makeover for my friends' weddings. Maybe because I look so 'scruffy' normally that I need to get one done so that I don't scare people off. Hehe! :-p The wedding was a Catholic church wedding, and I'm glad that I know what exactly happens in a Catholic mass, otherwise I would have been totally lost as I don't understand a single word of German. The wedding ceremony was very touching, and I almost shed a tear, but I managed not to, otherwise I could have ruined the make-up and scared people. Haha! :-) After the church wedding, we went to the hotel for the reception. First we had drinks and then we moved into the large function room (there were 140 people in total) and sat down to have coffee and cakes including the multi-layers wedding cake. After the coffee and cakes, we then went to release ballooons with well wishes on a postcard. Hopefully, a few of them will be picked up by people and the cards will be posted to the bride and groom. After that, we just mingled in the lobby as the tables in the large function room needed to be rearranged for the dinner. Dinner was buffet-style and there were loads of food. After dinner, of course there were lots of dancing and games as well. I was invited by people who were sitting at the same table to dance. I stopped dancing after 2 songs, not only because I was very bad at dancing but my feet were hurting as I don't normally wear heels. I need to apologise to these people, as I forgot to say goodbye to them before I returned to my hotel room as I was so tired by 1 am. The party actually didn't finish until 4 am. So, Peter, Tino & Denise, Werner & Jens, "Sorry!". Oh yeh, I need to apologise to Werner as I remember that I stepped on him during the dance. I hope he didn't get any bruised toes. :-)

I had a great time in Germany despite the tiredness. I took lots of photos but I am still trying to regain my energy before I could spend time to sort them out and upload them onto the web site. I will probably get them done during the upcoming bank holiday weekend.

German Wedding

One more day of work and I'll be flying to Germany for a long weekend to attend my friend's wedding. Hurray! I'm kind of excited as I have never been to a 'Western' wedding before and it would be interesting to attend a German one. I need a break to relax a bit, not that work is stressful at the moment, it's just that I need a break to re-energise myself.

I seem to be going away for holiday all the time this year. Okay, I did visit many places abroad this year, but I didn't go anywhere in 2002 & 2003, so I'm making up for that!

A mixture of running and walking

I can't believe I went running with the starter group of the Serpentines Running Club last night. I ran with the slower group for beginners to give running a go. Surprisingly, it was very enjoyable despite all the aches I had. Okay, it wasn't running all the way, I had to walk in between my very slow running. The weather was horrible yesterday evening, very windy and it was raining. The run started off from the sports centre, then onto Hyde Park. The total distance of the route is: 4.3 miles around Hyde Park plus 0.4 miles x 2 for the route between the sports centre and Speaker's Corner. That's a total of 5.1 miles! For those of you who works with metric, that's 8.2 km. It took me 1 hour 15 minutes to complete that. I was very pleased with myself not quitting half way through as it was very tough.

I don't think I will join that club to go running again, not because I don't like the people at the club. The people were great especially the guy who lead our run, Gowan. He was very patient and encouraging. The club is just too far to get to from work and quite far to get home from there, and it was tiring to run after work. Last night I went home straight away without changing and I didn't get home until 9.30pm. I hope I didn't cause any fellow passengers to faint because of my smell! :-p

I guess I will start running on a regular basis, probably on a treadmill at the college gym. Right now, I need some time to rest my aching legs before I can attempt running again.

Swee & My diet

It was nice seeing Swee yesterday when we went for drinks & dinner. She's the same, she hasn't changed much except she's a lot thinner now. Too bad that Kin, Yi Ming, Simon and Ray couldn't make it, but hopefully we should all be able to turn up at Gill's gathering to catch up. Please visit my homepage for photos I took yesterday.

Anyway, I have restarted my diet again today. Well, I always want to lose a bit more weight but it kind of stalled during the winter months. Now that it is summer, it should be easier to diet and I no longer have excuses for not eating salads because it is too cold. =) I don't actually mind having salads for lunch, but there aren't many choices near work. It used to be better when I was working in the Strand, there are more places to buy salads. Maybe I need to explore the surrounding areas to see if I can find places that sell nice salads.

I'm very tired...

I went to Oriental City for that TVB summer festival today and it was very tiring. We met up with our cousins and then waited for ages coz my cousin's kids want to see the celebs. I had to give Hayley piggy-back coz she's not tall enough to see the stage. Anyway, we got to see the celebs very late and we left shortly after seeing them.

There were so many people who went there, and you were bound to be able to bump into someone you know.
